Chiropractic and Vertigo

Vertigo symptoms are often greatly improved or eliminated with upper cervical chiropractic care.

Did you know that chiropractic can help to reduce or eliminate vertigo symptoms?  Our body's equilibrium is made up primarily of information compiled from the eyes, inner ear, and sensors found in muscle tissue throughout the body.  The upper neck region has the highest density of these sensors and therefore contributes a substantial amount of information to the equilibrium conversation.

When the information from one of these inputs doesn't align with the data from the others, we may experience a very unsettling feeling of spinning or unsteadiness.  These symptoms are often debilitating and induce anxiousness and fear, which in turn tends to worsen the severity of the symptoms.  Most frequently, doctors look the the ear as the source of vertigo but there are many potential causes that need to be evaluated.

How can chiropractic care help vertigo?

I have been specializing in upper cervical management of vertigo since 2016 and am able to evaluate different systems that may be contributing to vertigo symptoms.

Often, recurrent vertigo related to the ear stems from dysfunction of the eustachian tube, which creates a fullness sensation in the ear due to the build-up of stagnant fluid or mucus and subsequent inflammation.  Eustachian tube dysfunction tends to be related to upper neck misalignments that decrease the activation  of the small muscle that opens and closes the eustachian tube allowing for proper drainage.

Equilibrium issues stemming from the eyes can be related to eye positioning and targeting issues due to weakness of the eye muscles caused by neurological stress at the base of the skull.

Lastly, muscle dysfunction in the upper neck region can also be the primary cause of vertigo (called "cervicogenic vertigo").

I will work to evaluate the source of your symptoms and tailor my care to fit your unique situation.  This often includes precise adjustments to the upper neck but might also include outside referral to an ENT, audiologist, optometrist or ophthalmologist, or a primary care physician.
