 Antioxidants: Foods rich in antioxidants, such as berries, dark leafy greens, and nuts, help protect mitochondria from oxidative stress, which can damage their function.

  • Healthy Fats: Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, support mitochondrial membranes and improve their efficiency.

  • Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): This vital antioxidant is essential for ATP production. Foods like organ meats, fatty fish, and whole grains are good sources of CoQ10.

  • B Vitamins: These vitamins, particularly B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), and B12, are crucial for mitochondrial energy production. Include eggs, lean meats, and leafy greens in your diet to ensure adequate intake.

 2. Exercise: The Mitochondrial Booster

Regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to enhance mitochondrial function. Exercise stimulates the production of new mitochondria (a process known as mitochondrial biogenesis) and improves their efficiency. Cold therapy, such as cold showers, ice baths, or cryotherapy, can also support mitochondrial health. Exposure to cold stimulates the production of brown fat, a type of fat that is rich in mitochondria and plays a key role in thermogenesis (heat production). This process not only helps burn calories but also enhances mitochondrial function. Incorporating cold therapy into your routine a few times a week can help improve mitochondrial efficiency, reduce inflammation, and increase your body’s resilience to stress.

 5. Intermittent Fasting: Enhancing Mitochondrial Efficiency

Intermittent fasting, or cycling between periods of eating and fasting, has been shown to improve mitochondrial function. Sneak Peek Recipe #1

BROWNIE BATTER OVERNIGHT OATS

1/2 cup organic rolled oats

3/4 cups unsweetened almond milk

2 tbsp cacao powder

1 tbsp maple syrup

1 tsp vanilla extract

Add all ingredients to a mixing bowl and stir to combine.

Seal with a lid and store in the fridge overnight.

Serves 1.

DILL CHICKEN SALAD

1lb chicken breast, cooked & diced

1/2 cup celery, diced

1/3 cup onion, finely chopped

3/4 cups avocado oil mayo

1 tbsp dijon mustard

3 tbsp fresh dill or 3 tsp dried dill

salt & pepper to taste

Add all ingredients to a mixing bowl and mix well.

Serves 4.

CHICKPEA SKILLET

4 medium tomatoes

1 small onion, chopped

1-15oz can chickpeas, drained

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 small zucchini, chopped

1 bell pepper, chopped

10 fresh basil leaves

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp sesame seeds

1 tsp chili powder

In a large pan with a lid, add tomatoes and onions and let simmer over medium heat for 3-4 minutes.

Add the chickpeas, let simmer covered for 5 minutes.

Add garlic, zucchini, and bell peppers.

Cover and simmer for 2 minutes.

Turn off heat and stir in basil and olive oil.

Sprinkle with sesame seeds and chili powder.

Serves 4.

3 Day Challenge

Want to give a Whole Foods approach to your diet a try?  How about challenging yourself for just three days.

Focus on upping your water intake, eliminating sugar and processed foods, and following the nutrient-dense meals shown below.

For some, 3 days is enough to begin feeling the positive effects of eliminating inflammatory foods.  It can even begin changing your mindset and your relationship with food.

DAY ONE

Breakfast:

·        scrambled eggs with spinach and tomatoes, cooked in olive oil

Lunch:

·         grilled chicken breast

·         roasted sweet potatoes

·         steamed broccoli

Dinner:

·         baked salmon

·         asparagus

·         mixed green salad toped with avocado

DAY TWO

Breakfast:

·         omelet with mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions

Lunch:

·         turkey lettuce wraps filled with cucumber, shredded carrots, and guacamole

Dinner:

·         beef stir-fry with mixed vegetables (bell peppers, broccoli, snap peas), cooked in coconut oil

DAY THREE

Breakfast:

·         sliced banana with almond butter

·         handful of berries

Lunch:

·         tuna salad made with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, olives, and a vinaigrette dressing

Dinner:

·         grilled shrimp with zucchini noodles tossed in olive oil and garlic

·         roasted brussels sprouts

These simple meals emphasize whole foods, lean proteins, and nutrient-dense vegetables while avoiding processed ingredients.  Adjust portion sizes based on individual dietary needs.

Maintaining a healthy gut is essential for overall well-being, and probiotics play a key role in achieving this balance.  These living microorganisms offer numerous health benefits by enhancing gut health, improving digestion, and boosting the immune system.  However, not all bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract are beneficial, and an imbalance can lead to issues like bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nutrient deficiencies, known as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).

The Diet Wars

Selecting the “BEST” diet can be challenging, but our trained professionals are here to help!

"This diet is better than that diet."

 I've studied nutrition inside and out, forwards and backwards, for nearly 9 years.

I've seen and heard everything.  Especially when it comes to the diet craze.  Sometimes, what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another.

In Functional Nutrition, we take a deep dive into a person's personal health history as well as current health issues.  Most health issues can be traced to inflammation, as well as a leaky gut.

Back in the day, fat was bad for us, so everyone jumped on the low-fat, fat-free train.  Bad move.  Our bodies operate much better, in so many ways, when we consume healthy fats (like raw nuts, avocados, olives and high quality avocado, coconut and olive oils).

There are and always have been those calorie counters.  Health is not focusing on calories in and calories out.  Good health includes a diet rich in a wide variety of nutrient dense foods.

 Let's look at some of the more well known diets today.  I recommend most, but not all, depending on the person's health issues.

 The Paleo Diet

This diet emphasizes whole, unprocessed foods, resembling those consumed by Paleolithic humans.  It promotes weight loss, improved satiety, and reduced inflammation by focusing on lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds while excluding processed foods, grains, legumes, and dairy.

 The Ketogenic Diet

This diet (also known as keto) restricts carbohydrates, encouraging the body to enter ketosis and burn fat for fuel.  It aids weight loss, stabilizes blood sugar levels, and may improve cognitive function, but requires careful monitoring of macronutrient intake to maintain ketosis.  Some research shows that doing this long term can result in some negative side effects.

 The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet, inspired by traditional dietary patterns of Mediterranean countries, emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and moderate wine consumption.  It promotes heart health, reduces inflammation, and supports weight management while offering flexibility and enjoyment in eating.

 The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) Diet

This diet eliminates potentially inflammatory foods to manage autoimmune conditions.  It focuses on nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and high-quality proteins while avoiding grains, legumes, dairy, processed foods, refined sugars, and nightshade vegetables.  It may reduce autoimmune symptoms, support gut health, and improve overall well-being.

 The Plant-Based/Vegetarian/Vegan Diet

A plant-based diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes while minimizing or excluding animal products.  It offers some health benefits, but requires careful planning to ensure adequate intake of essential nutrients like protein, iron, and vitamin B12.

 Each diet offers unique benefits, addressing various health concerns and preferences.  Choosing the most suitable approach depends on individual health goals, dietary restrictions, and lifestyle factors, with guidance from healthcare professionals recommended for personalized dietary plans.
